Mid-Week Message - Guaging Spiritual Temperature

"To the angel of the church at Laodicea write:  These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.  I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth."  Revelation 3:14-16 (NIV)

I worked in childcare for many years.  In fact, my first job in a company was at a Kindercare in Austin, Texas while I was in high school.  One of the fun parts of working with children in a child care facility or school is the field trips.  I got to tour a lot of fun places.  We visited a bakery and had fresh baked bread and butter, a Coca-Cola bottling plant, and a car manufacturing plant where we got to see an entire car put together from beginning to end.  In the summers we went to movies every week, the swimming pool and to various playgrounds.  One summer in Dallas, we went to a wonderful place that had playground equipment and a petting zoo.  The kids loved it!  Unfortunately, it was over one hundred degrees outside so the adults were miserable.  When we finally got back to the building, I hurried to the first water fountain that I saw.  I bent down and took a drink of what I was expecting to be refreshingly cold only to find myself with a mouthful of lukewarm liquid which I immediately spat out.  It was nothing that I wanted in my mouth, let alone to go down my throat!  I asked our assistant where a better fountain was and was told that they were having trouble with all of them so if I wanted something cold I would have to get it after leaving.
I tell you this story because it made the above verses very real to me.  I can understand the concept of something being neither hot nor cold and wanting to rid yourself of it.  When I began to think about it from a spiritual point of view I found I had a lot of introspection to do.  How was my love for the Lord?  Was I totally disengaged?  Was I on fire?  Sadly, I found that I was more in the lukewarm vicinity than I realized.
So what do we do when we find ourselves in that predicament?  Gratefully, we are capable of changing.  One-on-one time with the Lord is where we need to start.  We need to renew our relationship with Him through prayer.  He is alive and active in our lives whether we realize it or not and we need to be aware and acknowledge that with gratitude.  We need to spend time in His Word, reminding ourselves of what is written and allowing the Holy Spirit to show us what the passages mean to us personally.  We need to make sure that we are in a place of worship and with other Christians regularly so that we are being nurtured and can nurture others in the faith.  And we need to share the gospel with those around us so that they may know Jesus and accept the salvation that He offers.  This is an ongoing process.  As we do these things, we grow closer to Him and stronger in our faith.  We will see Him use our lives for His glory as we gain spiritual insight and become more open to sharing what He has done for us.
I pray that this week will bring the opportunity for you to see firsthand whether you are cold, hot or lukewarm.  For me, it is something I have to gauge each day.  It is so easy to put things off and before I know it, I am slipping back into being lukewarm and I don't want that to happen.  That spiritual thermometer has to stay with me at all times.  Have a refreshing week.  God bless you!

Cultivating Reverent Fear: Embracing Holiness in a World of Distractions

I greet you with the love and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. As we gather once again to delve deeper into God's Word, I am reminded of the profound call to holy living that resonates throughout Scripture. Last time, we explored the initial verses of 1 Peter, which laid the foundation for our understanding of this divine mandate.

Today, we embark on the next leg of our journey through 1 Peter, focusing specifically on verses 17-20 of the first chapter. In these verses, Peter implores believers to live in reverent fear of God, acknowledging His holiness, His impartial judgment, and the preciousness of the redemption secured through the blood of Jesus Christ.

As we unpack these verses together, may our hearts be stirred to a deeper reverence for our Almighty Creator and a greater commitment to living lives that reflect His holiness. Let us open our hearts and minds to receive God's truth and allow it to transform us from the inside out.

May the Holy Spirit guide us as we delve into His Word and may His presence be palpable among us as we seek to understand and apply His truth to our lives.

Let us delve deeper into the profound concept of reverent fear and its profound significance in our relationship with God. Reverent fear, as we shall discover, is not about being afraid of God in the conventional sense, but rather about cultivating a deep respect, awe, and reverence for His holiness, authority, and majesty. Throughout the Scriptures, we encounter numerous examples of individuals who demonstrated reverent fear in their encounters with the Almighty. Consider Abraham, who displayed profound reverence when he was willing to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice (Genesis 22:12), or Moses, who removed his sandals in awe when he encountered God at the burning bush (Exodus 3:6). Likewise, Isaiah was overwhelmed by a sense of his own unworthiness in the presence of God's holiness (Isaiah 6:5), and the disciples fell on their faces in reverent fear at the transfiguration of Jesus (Matthew 17:6-7).

As we reflect on these examples, we come to understand that reverent fear serves as the foundational aspect of our relationship with God. It is the recognition of His infinite greatness and our utter dependence on Him. Moreover, reverent fear motivates us to obedience, not out of a sense of obligation or fear of punishment, but out of a deep love and reverence for our Creator. Contrary to common misconceptions, reverent fear is not about living in dread or terror of God. Instead, it is about approaching Him with humility, trust, and awe, knowing that He is both just and merciful. Far from being a sign of weakness, reverent fear is a mark of spiritual maturity and wisdom, guiding us into a deeper understanding of God's character and His will for our lives.

By grasping the nature of reverent fear, we lay a solid foundation for our journey of holy living. As we continue to explore this concept, may our hearts be stirred to a deeper reverence for our Almighty Creator and a greater commitment to living lives that reflect His holiness.

Peter's words remind us of the solemn responsibility we have as believers to live in reverent fear during our time on earth. This call is not based on fear of punishment, but rather on a deep reverence for God's holiness and a recognition of His impartial judgment. As children of God, we are called to honor and respect our Heavenly Father, knowing that He judges everyone according to their deeds.

Furthermore, Peter highlights the preciousness of the redemption secured through the blood of Jesus Christ. Our salvation was not purchased with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, the spotless Lamb of God. This profound truth underscores the gravity of our calling to holy living and the sacrificial nature of Christ's atonement on our behalf.

As we reflect on these verses, let us be reminded of the high standard to which we are called as followers of Christ. Living in reverent fear involves a lifestyle characterized by obedience, humility, and devotion to God. It is a continual surrender of our will to His, acknowledging His sovereignty and submitting to His authority in all things.

Peter emphasizes the significance of Christ as the spotless Lamb of God, foreknown before the foundation of the world and revealed in these last times for our sake. This profound truth underscores the sacrificial nature of Christ's atonement on our behalf and highlights the incredible love and mercy of God toward humanity.
As recipients of this redemption, we are called to live in light of the precious blood of Christ. Our lives are not our own; we belong to Him who redeemed us. This realization compels us to live lives of obedience and holiness, reflecting the character of our Savior in all that we do.

Moreover, the reality of redemption reminds us of the great price that was paid for our salvation. It is a humbling and awe-inspiring truth that should lead us to a deeper appreciation of God's grace and a greater commitment to honoring Him with our lives.

As we consider the implications of redemption, let us be motivated to live lives that are worthy of the calling we have received. May we continually surrender ourselves to God's will, allowing His Spirit to guide and empower us to walk in obedience and holiness. Let us strive to live as living testimonies of God's redeeming love, shining brightly in a world that desperately needs to encounter the life-changing power of the Gospel.

Let us explore practical ways to apply the principles of reverent fear and holy living to our daily lives.

Firstly, it's essential for us to examine our hearts in light of God's holiness. This introspection should lead to confession and repentance of any areas where we have fallen short. Additionally, we should cultivate a lifestyle of worship, where every aspect of life is lived unto God's glory. This includes daily devotionals, prayer, and participation in corporate worship gatherings.

Furthermore, we are called to walk in obedience to God's Word, aligning our actions with His commands and principles. This obedience should flow from a heart that reveres and honors God above all else. Seeking accountability from fellow believers can help us stay on track in our journey of holy living, characterized by love, grace, and mutual support.

It's crucial to guard against sin and temptation, recognizing the destructive nature of sin and its hindrance to holy living. This may involve setting boundaries, avoiding situations that could lead to sin, and seeking help when needed. Moreover, we should prioritize growing in grace and allowing God's Spirit to work in our lives, transforming us into the image of Christ.

Finally, we are called to share the Gospel with others and be ambassadors of Christ in our spheres of influence. As we live lives characterized by reverent fear and holy living, we naturally draw others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

By applying these practical principles to our lives, we can experience the fullness of joy and fulfillment that comes from walking in reverent fear and holy living. Let us commit to living lives that honor and glorify God in all that we do, striving to be faithful stewards of the calling we have received as His children.

As we reflect on the profound truths presented in 1 Peter 1:17-20, let us be stirred to a deeper commitment to living lives characterized by reverent fear and holy living. May we understand the gravity of our calling as children of God, recognizing the preciousness of the redemption secured through the blood of Jesus Christ. As Peter admonishes us, let us live in reverent fear during our time on earth, knowing that God judges everyone impartially. Let us honor Him in all that we do, seeking to align our lives with His will and His Word.
In the face of challenges and temptations, let us stand firm in His grace, drawing strength from His Spirit and His Word. Let us heed the words of Peter and follow his example, living lives that are holy and pleasing to God. May our lives be a testimony to the transforming power of the Gospel, drawing others into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

As we journey forward, let us continually surrender ourselves to God's will, allowing His Spirit to guide and empower us to walk in obedience and holiness. Let us commit to living lives that reflect the character of our Savior, shining brightly in a world that desperately needs to encounter the life-changing power of the Gospel.

Therefore, I challenge each and every one of you to follow the words of Peter and live a life of holiness, marked by reverent fear and obedience to God. Let us strive to honor Him in all that we do, knowing that He is faithful to empower us and lead us on the path of righteousness. Stand firm in His grace, and may His presence be evident in every aspect of your life.

“Cultivating a Mindset of Holiness”

Dear Friends,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ! I trust you are all doing well and experiencing the abundant blessings of our Heavenly Father.

Today, I want to encourage you to cultivate a mindset of holiness in every area of your life. As we discussed yesterday, holiness is not merely a set of rules or regulations to follow, but a way of life that flows from a heart surrendered to God.

Let us be intentional about guarding our thoughts, focusing on spiritual truths, and practicing discipline and self-control. May the Word of God be our constant companion, guiding and shaping our minds according to His will.

As you go about your day, remember that you are called to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:16). Let this truth be the foundation upon which you build your life, and may it empower you to live in a manner worthy of the calling you have received.

With love and blessings,
Brother Jesse

Morning Prayer for Friday, April 12

Dear Lord,

We come before You this morning with hearts full of gratitude for the blessings of another day. As we step into the opportunities and challenges that await us, we ask for Your guidance and protection. Strengthen us with Your Spirit, that we may stand firm in our faith and walk in obedience to Your will. Help us to be agents of Your grace and ambassadors of Your love, shining brightly in a world that is often dark and troubled. May Your peace reign in our hearts, and Your glory be revealed through our lives. In Your precious name, we pray.

Amen.
